In the aftermath of 9-11, the US cut back on the number of visas issued, including non-immigrant visas used by employers to hire foreigners with technical skills (H-1B Visas). International business depends on mobility of information, goods and human resources; the US visa restrictions are in direct conflict with this need. Add to that […]

It had occurred to me recently that I was hearing more “American” voices at the end of the menu maze for service and related calls. That’s, of course, difficult to judge at best, but according to the Economic Times there are some indications that the stream of outsourced business is slowing or even reversing course. […]

Germany is on track to keep the top spot as the country with the most exports. German sales abroad are expected to rise 5 percent and exceed Euro 1 trillion (or $1.6 trillion). China is number two on the exporters list.

The past 7 years of US politics have done a lot of damage to the country’s reputation abroad. (Refer also to my previous post on this topic.) But it was still a shock to see the headline in the International Herald Tribune this week “U.S. ‘magic is over’….French diplomat talks of challenges”.

This week I learned another acronym: BRIC stands for Brazil, Russia, India and China.
The term has been used for a number of years by economists; you can also find a number of investment funds which are focused on these countries.
These four countries have been identified by economists as having rapid growth. Some even predict that […]

I have gotten so used to the common European currency (Euro) that I often forget that the UK still uses the Pound. Okay, I don’t really forget that, but I do forget to pack my miscellaneous Pounds when I get ready to go to the airport. I usually don’t need any cash at all when […]

I just got back from a trip to the UK. The destination is actually called “London” but I hate to say that since I was no where near the city. London has four airports: Heathrow in the West is the largest airport in Europe, Gatwick in the South, City Airport in the middle and Stansted […]

The days of the rallying cry “Buy American” are gone. The Pentagon has decided to purchase the next generation of tanker aircraft from the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Co. (EADS) instead of from Boeing and, this being an election year, politicians are fuming.
Just a quick scratch at the surface, however, shows how pervasive […]

Yesterday my company received a Request for Proposal (RFP) in French.
Now, I am a US citizen living and working in Germany. In our office in Munich, we have folks from a lot of different countries including Spain, Poland, UK and India. But no one from France. (Murphy’s Law)
This time, instead of sending the 40-plus pages out […]
