Business school in Europe
The US has had a bit of a lock on the international business school market for many years now, with the exception of a few schools like INSEAD, near Paris, and the London School of Economics in - where is that again - oh, right, London. Part of that was no doubt due to the relative flexibility of the US educational system, with our willingness to experiment with compressed semesters, evening and weekend schedules, and intensive courses.
Now, according to this article from the German newsmagazine Der Spiegel, European business schools are becoming more serious competitors. Ironically, given the weakness of the dollar, one factor luring in even American students is cost - tuition at some of the better European business schools is still less than that at top US business schools.
It’s not mentioned in the article, I have to think the tightening of visa procedures in the US since 2001 and the perception of the US officials as increasingly hostile to foreign visitors has contributed to the success of schools elsewhere. While there are some indications that these problems have eased, delays due to consular interviews and other security requirements may well have made some students think twice about studying in the US.
