China, Freedom of Information and the Olympics
In a previous post, I wrote about plans in China to clean up the environment for the Olympic Games this August in Beijing. In turns out that China is also planning on lowering their Firewall restrictions, at least in locations where large number of visitors will be. As reported in the March 2008 edition of The Atlantic, it is expected that foreigners in Beijing for the Games will experience “surprisingly free and uncontrolled” access to the Internet. Even taboo topics such as Tibetian independence and Tiananmen Masacre should be accessable, as well as Wikipedia, which otherwise is not available to users in China.
China’s Great Firewall is a part of the “Golden Shield Project”, a large system of censorship and monitoring, which officials say is to protect their citizens. The system is incredibly complex and literally leaves Chinese Internet users in the dark - they never know what sites will be blocked or whether their attempt at accessing forbidden sites will be tracked by authorities.
For those of us looking at China from the outside, the issues remain a conundrum: rapid industrialization versus the environment, growing divergence between rich and poor, controlled capitalism without democracy and participation in the information age without freedom of information.
What is your opinion of the Great Firewall in China and the government’s attempts to keep their citizens away from certain topics?
