Dumb and dumber, airline style

While we’re on the subject of airfares, I have to comment about the latest, dumbest idea I’ve ever heard of in my entire life. Having grown up in the travel industry, I’ve grown up with the idea that the airlines do strange and incomprehensible things. The new nickel-and-dime-you-to-death strategy is the worst ever. In case you don’t know, certain American airlines have added a host of new charges for “services,” including a $25 charge for the first piece of baggage checked.
Aside from the fact that $25 added to the airfare wouldn’t cause even the most hardened spendthrift to second-guess their travel plans, the truth is that travelers already try to stuff far too much luggage into the overhead bins. Airlines should be charging people who bring large bags onto the plane, not those who actually check them, thereby freeing up room for the rest of us.
It’s really as though the airlines don’t want us to fly, so they keep adding annoyance after annoyance until we all give it up for good. What about you? What do you think the dumbest thing is which the airlines have ever done?

It sure is irritating to be nickel and dimed. What will they do to people who board last and can’t fit their luggage into the overheads? What then?
