June is European Soccer Month

If you are travelling to Europe this month or even if you are communicating with colleagues in Europe, beware! The European Football Championships (that’s “soccer” for Americans) are running until June 29th 2008.
The top 16 national teams from around Europe started playing in 4 groups on June 7th. The two most successful teams of each group will proceed to the quarterfinals. The host countries are Austria and Switzerland.
If you have contact with folks from Portugal, Turkey, Croatia, the Netherlands or Spain, they will likely be in a state of jubilation, as their teams have already qualified for the quarterfinals. People from Switzerland, the Czech Republic, France, Italy and Greece on the other hand may be in a bad mood, as their teams have either already lost or are close to it. (2006 World Champions Italy still have one chance left.) And what about the UK? Best not to mention the topic at all if you can avoid it: The English National Team did not even qualify to participate and the country is in a crisis.

The Germans probably also fall into the grumpy category, but then that’s sometimes true when they are winning.
