Keeping up with international business

by Chris on January 5th, 2008

ekonomist

I have a confession to make - I no longer subscribe to any business periodicals at all, none, nothing, nada, zilch. One reason for that is time, in that I barely have the time to read my local newspaper every day let alone an additional newspaper or magazine. Another reason is that most everything is available on the internet these days. Heck, this evening alone I’ve looked at stories in the Financial Times, the Economist, Radio Praha, der Spiegel, the New York Times … you get the idea. I did not in fact look at the ekonomist, pictured above, but that too is offered online for those with an interest in international business.

Nowadays you can subscribe to alerts with the push of a button, and the major problem is actually an excess of information rather than a shortage. Indeed, that excess is the very reason people read blogs like this one - you are relying on us, on some level, to look through the news and information thats out there and select the best stuff for you.

I, for one, am flattered and honored. That said, I’ve been considering going back to a newspaper or periodical which covers international business. I was once a loyal subscriber to the Economist, and I enjoyed my stint as an FT subscriber, and my initial inclination is to go with one of those. I was not a fan of the Wall Street Journal, and we’ve already heard that Jean likes the International Herald Tribune (if not strictly for business).

Now I want your feedback - what’s your favorite offline source of business news? And, if you’re an online news kind of person, share your favorite links as well and we’ll add the best of them to our blogroll.

Have you heard of the idea of the broader business perspective? Well, this is what the IHT tries to offer its readers through its general interest pages. You might not know what it is you need or want to know about, and how does your internet browsing cover that?

I have always (and still do) consider the International Herald Tribune a great paper for expats, but not much more than that. I do, in fact, subscribe to a general circulation newspaper and my daily forays to the BBC as well as the NYT and Süddeutschezeitung newspaper sites give me access to an awful lot of information. I think I have general interest covered pretty well, if not through the IHT.

As Chris mentioned in the post, I am a fan of the IHT. I appreciate that it supplies good background information on complex topics yet remains concise. A few years ago, I had a subscription to the European edition of Newsweek, but they stopped publishing it; I am still looking for a replacement - something light (as in easy to read) which covers a wide range of international business topics. I also subscribe (hard copy and on-line) to the (international editions) of trade magazines for my industry, the main one being Automotive News Europe.

I usually see it first on Google News. I can select specific topics to see (or not see) and the number of articles in that topic. For example, if I want the world of Britney Spears, I can find all the news about her every day. (No, I really don’t do this.)

I love customizing what I see on the news.
As an example of the immediacy of Internet news, I first found out about the plane crash that killed JFK Jr. from the Internet, not TV or Radio. Sign of the times….
