Mistake Monday - Double Trouble

A number of years ago, I managed a project for a company based in the Detroit Metro Area. (That is the only clue you need to know what industry I work in.) On one trip, I was joined by a colleague from Germany. I picked him up from the airport and we drove to his hotel in Troy. The hotel I was staying in had been booked up, and we were glad that he was able to book a room in a hotel just down the street.

When we got to the hotel and he went to check in, the hotel staff could not find his reservation and all rooms were already occupied. Luckily, he had a print-out of the reservation and pulled it out to show them. After a bit of typing into computers and a few perplexed looks, the hotel clerk told us, “Yes, Mr. Schmidt, you do have a reservation, but in Troy, Alabama and not in Troy, Michigan!”

Fortunately, the hotel clerk was friendly enough to make a few phone calls to other local hotels and find a room.

In the last few years, I have had a number of trips every year to Birmingham, England. You can bet that I check every reservation thoroughly to make sure our company travel agency doesn’t send me to Birmingham, Alabama!
