Online Translations

Every now and then I get an email or a memo written in a language that I don’t speak. If I need to “get the drift” of the foreign message, I copy and paste the text into an online translator and - viola! - something resembling English comes back. I wouldn’t send this translation to be published, but it’s good enough to help me understand the original message. Google also offers something similar for website translations.

There must be thousands of websites offering online translation as a service.

The site I use the most is Babel Fish. They offer a nice choice of languages and can handle text blocks pretty well.

SDL, one of the largest translation companies in the world, also offers a free translation site. If the free service doesn’t meet your needs, you can contact SDL for a real translation.

The number one free online translation website for German (offering English-German, French-German and Spanish-German) is called Leo.

If you need a quick and dirty translation, a good place to start is www.onelook.com. OneLook is a portal/search engine which searches thousands of dictionaries on-line and displays the results for you. Be sure to click on “Find translations” before you start the search. With OneLook, you don’t need to specify the language, which can come in handy when you have a word or phrase and actually don’t know what language it is.

Lexicool is a similar type of portal site, but more geared to the needs of professional translators.

What are your favorite translation sites? What experiences have you had using Google translations of websites?
