Stuck in Traffic

by Jean Mercedes on November 2nd, 2007

Why pay over 180 euros for a hotel room at the Frankfurt airport when you can stay in a small town nearby for about half the price?

That’s what I said to myself when I planned my trip. Originally I had planned to travel to Frankfurt by train, stay overnight, take the local train (S-Bahn) to the airport and continue my journey with Lufthansa. I found a business hotel (Mercure) in Hanau pretty close to the train station. Unfortunately, I wound up taking a rental car to Frankfurt instead of the train. My company now has a mobile navigation device which can be used on business trips, but since it was already booked, I went into Google and printed out all of the directions. The meeting went well and we found
the Mercure without any large hassles (even with 2 construction sites which caused detours - the Google directions were instantly worthless).

Hanau really isn’t that far from the Frankfurt airport, but I had been warned about the traffic, so we left the Mercure in Hanau an hour before check-in time. We should have left earlier. Is there anyone that can use directions printed from the Internet, Google or otherwise? They never work for me. Within 5 minutes of leaving the hotel, we were speeding along a nice and empty autobahn, the only problem being that the directions did not mention this autobahn. Another 5 minutes later - STAU - we were stuck in traffic. To make this short, there are a lot of highways around Frankfurt and not all of them lead to the airport. We got to the airport 15 minutes after check-in and missed the flight.

Next time, I’ll pay extra and stay at the NH Hotel directly at the airport.
